Background

Food waste is a critical global issue with significant environmental, economic, and social implications. This dashboard aims to provide an overview of the scale of food waste in different sectors and uncover possible disparities between countries within the G-7.

Interesting Findings

  • The Household is the most wasteful sector when it comes to food waste, in most cases accounting for more than 60% of combined food waste.
  • Among all G7 countries, retail generates the least waste, except for France, where food service produces the least waste at 17.78% (kg/capita/year), compared to France's retail sector, which accounts for 19.26% (kg/capita/year) of waste.
  • The United States food service generates over 20.9 million tonnes of waste, securing the top position. In second place, Japan produces nearly 10 times less waste, amounting to only 1.9 million tonnes.
